Description

Ralph Sadleir is known to the residents of Standon and Puckeridge firstly for having built Standon Lordship, and also for having a local school named after him.  But he should really be known for living a life that spanned all five Tudor monarchs, working for three of them, and keeping his head!  He was raised by Thomas Cromwell, for whom he worked during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.  He then became Private Secretary to Henry VIII during the turmoil of his six wives, followed by Edward VI and Protector Somerset.  As a Protestant, he was then forced to retire to his country house during the reign of Mary I, and finally returned to the Privy Council to work for Elizabeth I.  Because of his in-depth knowledge of Scottish affairs, acquired during his service to Henry and Edward, Ralph was then given the immense task of overseeing the incarceration of Mary Queen of Scots.

How he dealt with his life at Court, a crisis in his marriage, raising eight children and dying as the wealthiest commoner in England are all examined in this book.
