The William Ransom Physic Garden opened on 20th May 1990 in the grounds of Hitchin library and museum in Paynes Park. This guidebook tells the story of the Garden and its plants and their uses. It also highlights two important town businesses – the Ransom pharmaceutical company and Perks & Llewellyn, pharmacists and lavender growers and distillers.

About the authors
This book was researched and written by David McNamee, Nicky Nicoll and Carola Scupham, all Physic Garden volunteers. Sue Minter, Past President of the Institute of Horticulture, wrote the Foreword; Dr Gerry Tidy wrote the introduction and about Perks & Llewellyn; and Michael Ransom, a former Chairman of William Ransom & Son, wrote about the company.
