Description

The search for Standon’s medieval manor houses.

When people think of Standon’s manor house, if indeed they ever do, they would probably think of the present-day Lordship. But by the time Ralph Sadleir had this built around 1546, the whole ‘manorial system’ was pretty much at an end. What we now call the ‘Middle Ages’ was when manor houses had been a necessity – not just as a home for the lord of the manor, but as the centre of all agricultural life on the manors of England

So little is known of Standon’s medieval manor house that Kathryn Shreeve thought it important to try to document what we do know, as well as to speculate on what sort of house it might have been. This is therefore very much a detective story, but not, unfortunately, one where all is solved by the end of the book!
