Description

These essays are the result of a Hertfordshire Gardens Trust Study Day held at Haileybury on 18th April 2015 to present the new information discovered about the conception and construction of East India College, and its setting in the landscape. This volume is the first time that the buildings and landscape of the college have been viewed in context. The college, commissioned and administered by the East India Company was a unique institution. Its curriculum was ahead of its time and divided between the European and Oriental departments. William Wilkins’ innovative ‘campus’ style design broke away from the traditional English academic layout of college buildings. Humphry Repton’s commission to landscape the site – his only executed eductional landscape – was an astute intepretation of the site and buildings at Haileybury.

The records of the East India College which relate to the work of Wilkins and Repton have been little studied until now. The story of the foundation of a college at Haileybury, of the involvement of many local landowners who were either Directors or shareholders of the Company and the choice of architect, landscape gardener, design and setting has been the subject of much recent research and the inspiration for this volume.
