Description
This book charts the history of Stevenage new town centre – a pioneering development of great significance within pedestrian planning. Designated under legislation in 1946, Stevenage was Britain’s first post-war new town and was constructed around an existing historical settlement. Planning and design of the new town centre was mainly undertaken in the period 1945 – 56, and proved controversial on account of the novelty of the proposals. Work involved the notable planners Gordon Stephenson and Clarence Stein, but the key figure was Leonard Vincent, Chief Architect of Stevenage Development Corporation.
Completed in 1959, Stevenage’s shopping precinct is of particular note for being the earliest pedestrian development of its type in the world. On account of its huge level of success, and the expansion of Stevenage as a whole, the precinct was extended in phases over the following two decades, work which is discussed in this book. Also covered are the town centre’s other buildings, including offices, the dance hall and the library, together with an assessment of Stevenage’s significance and influence and consideration of its future. Now in its 75th anniversary year, Stevenage is at a key point in its history with a major regeneration scheme already underway.
