Description
This volume examines the debates for and against the education of the masses. It considers the role of the church and the growth of government intervention. William Forster’s pivotal 1870 Elementary Education Act is reviewed in detail, as is the growth in literacy in the region. The local availability of private education is also investigated.
The author has had a long Hertfordshire ancestry and he has lived and worked in the area for almost thirty years. His previous two publications have covered his research into whether the Icknield Way was a nineteenth-century migration barrier and marriage obstacle, and secondly a socio-economic study of the small towns of north-east Hertfordshire’s C19th extra-urban matrix.
