Description
The name “Priory Fields” refers to the meadow land which once existed along the River Lea to the east of Hertford. Following the arrival of the railway in 1843, this stretch of peaceful countryside was transformed into a bustling suburb, with development taking place around the railway station and along the main road from Hertford to Ware.
In this “scrapbook” we discover how it all came about. We learn how various streets and buildings came into being, and what sort of shops, industries, utilities and institutions were first established in the area. And we also meet a whole gallery of colourful local characters, some of whom played a major role in the life of the locality. The story is accompanied by extracts from period newspapers and by the memories of the local residents, all lavishly illustrated with prints, maps and photographs.
