Description

This new book brings together work by the late Dr. Violet Rowe on Place House in the seventeenth century and her detailed and sympathetic research into the children from Christ’s Hospital, who were fostered in Ware from 1564 onwards. Place House became their schoolroom and the cottages in Bluecoat Yard were built for them.

The illustration on the front cover is the original Bluecoat Boy which once stood in the niche at the entrance to the yard and is now inside Place house. Above is the new Bluecoat Boy, carved in Elm by the sculptor Angela Godfrey and installed in the niche in 1987.
