Description
An alphabetical index of names of those who were subject to a removal order.
Before the welfare state, and especially before laws were changed in 1834, provision for people who were unable to earn a living was chiefly a responsibility of the parish in which you lived. To receive assistance you had to prove that a particular parish was your legal ‘place of settlement’ and criteria were rigorously enforced. If you could not prove settlement, you would be removed from the parish and sent elsewhere. The index should prove invaluable for family historians.
The documents indexed in this volume are generated from the Poor Law as it existed before 1834 and are held by Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies.
