Description
Dedicated to the exuberant childhood memories of those living in the Gallows Hill area of Hertford before, during and just after WWII, this book provides a fascinating glimpse into the lived past of this part of town.
Gallows Hill essentially comprises the Stanstead Road and land to either side. While the area was known over time for three institutions that were housed there – the workhouse, isolation hospital and Kingsmead School – it also provided space, good housing and fresh air for families to put down roots after WW1 and a natural adventure playground in which those, and subsequent, generations of children could explore and play.
Using diverse published records and photographs alongside material gained from extensive oral history interviews with residents, the author provides a truly engaging and informative read, full of warm and affectionate memories for this interesting area.
