Description

This guide to Hertford was originally produced for visitors to Hertford in 1973 when the town celebrated the 1,300th anniversary of the first synod (meeting of bishops) in England, which took place in Hertford in September 673 AD. This third edition takes account of changes since then.

The guide has been written for those interested in knowing something of the background of this ancient county town. It takes the form of four walks around the oldest parts of the town, pointing out features of historic or architectural interest, together with one walk along the River Lea and accross the meads, a large area, formerly common land used by the townspeople for centuries.
