In 1983 Lionel Munby visited Datchworth village hall to run a local history course for parishioners from Datchworth and Tewin. Participants were taught to read and interpret 16th and 17th century writing using material from a selection of Tudor and Stuart wills and inventories of contemporary parishioners, some of which have been included in the book. Lionel wrote a comprehensive summary of the students’ findings under appropriate headings using information that they had gleaned from the wills. Inventories revealed details about accommodation, particular types of trade and many items and produce associated with these two farming communities.
