This book tells the story of the formation of The Sawbridgeworth Allotments Association and the various allotments that have existed in Sawbridgeworth through time. Back in time there was a prosperous rural economy that existed in Sawbridgeworth. Sawbridgeworth has undergone great change, with nurseries, maltings and mills all disappearing to make way for extended suburban living.

The latter half of the book is written by present-day allotment holders and describes their experiences of how tending an allotment is a way to be in touch with the land, in an increasingly suburban landscape.
