Description

Ware has a long and fascinating history. It grew up where one of the ancient trackways of pre-historic Britain crossed the River Lea. That track became a military road for Roman legions and became known as Ermine Street.  Beside Ermine Street, a small Roman town was established and a Saxon settlement, eventually the centre of a large estate. Ware was an important stopping point on the Old North Road from London to Scotland in the Middle Ages and its inns became famous, along with the Great bed of Ware. The town was a major centre for the country’s brewing industry.

The modern town has a wealth of fine old buildings from St Mary’s Church, The Priory, Place House, Scott’s Grotto and the riverside gazebos. All of this is described in vivid detail in David Perman’s ‘New History’ – it is new because never before has the full story of Ware been told from its earliest times to the present, using archaeological records, ancient documents and people’s memories.
