- Access Conditions: Royston Union comprised the following Hertfordshire parishes: Ashwell, Barkway, Barley, Hinxworth, Kelshall, Nuthamstead, Reed, Royston and Therfield, together with the following in Cambridgeshire: Abington, Piggotts, Barrington, Bassingbourn, Foulmere, Foxton, Great Chishall, Guilden Morden, Heydon, Kneesworth, Litlington, Little Chishall, Melbourn, Meldreth, Shepreth, Shingay, Steeple Morden, Thriplow, Wendy, Whaddon. The Poor Law Institution, built in 1835, was called 'Royston House' from 1930 until 1948 when it was renamed 'Heath Lodge'. It was demolished in 1972 (see J L Corfield 'Cockett and Nash Architects and Auctioneers of Royston' "Hertfordshire's Past" 23 (Autumn 1987). See also HSS10/10 and HSS11/1. When the functions of the Boards of Guardians passed to the County Council in 1930, the Royston Board of Guardians was succeeded by the Hitchin Guardians' Committee (see HCC37E and HSS 3/6).
