- Description: Hemel Hempstead Union consisted of the following parishes:
Bovingdon, Flamstead, Flaunden, Great Gaddesden, Hemel Hempstead, King's Langley, plus Markyate, created in 1897. The Poor Law Institution, built in 1836 and called 'Hempstead House' from 1930, became the St Paul's wing of the Hemel Hempstead General Hospital.
When the functions of the Boards of Guardians passed to the County Council in 1930, the Hemel Hempstead Board of Guardians was succeeded by the Dacorum Guardians Committee (see HCC37C and HSS 3/4)
For details of provenance and numbering system, see the introduction to BG/. BG/HEM/22 was not formerly numbered. BG/HEM/23 was part of Off Acc 529
