• Title: BISHOPS STORTFORD BOARD OF GUARDIANS
• Description: Bishops Stortford Union comprised the following parishes: Albury, Bishops Stortford, Braughing, Much Hadham, Little Hadham, Brent Pelham, Furneux Pelham, Stocking Pelham, Sawbridgeworth, Thorley and High Wych (created 1901), together with the following in Essex: Berden, Birchanger, Elsenham, Farnham, Great Hallingbury, Little Hallingbury, Henham, Manuden, Stansted Mountfitchet and Ugley. The Poor Law Institution, built in 1837, became Haymeads Hospital (now - 2009 - part of Hertfordshire and Essex General Hospital), and the childrens' home at Stansted Mountfitchet (Essex) opened in 1912, became known as 'Haroldene' (see HSS8/17).
  
  When the functions of the Board of Guardians passed to the County Council in 1930, the Bishops Stortford Board of Guardians was succeeded by the Bishops Stortford Guardians' Committee (see HCC37B; HSS3/3).
