- Title: BARNET BOARD OF GUARDIANS
- Description: Barnet Union comprised the following Hertfordshire parishes: Chipping Barnet, East Barnet, Elstree, Ridge, Shenley and Totteridge, together with the following in Middlesex: Finchley, Friern Barnet, Hadley and South Mimms. The Poor Law Institution in Barnet was built in 1836. The Guardians also ran Wellhouse Hospital (now - 2009 - part of Barnet General Hospital) which was built during the First World War as a military hospital and handed over to the Board of Guardians in 1918, together with two children's homes, 'Guyscliffe' (bought in 1914) and 'Rosendale' (see HSS8/1 and HSS8/2 respectively). When the functions of the Boards of Guardians passed to the County Council in 1930, the Barnet Board of Guardians was succeeded by the Barnet Guardians' Committee (see HCC37A and HSS3/2).
